Subway Reefs...
Sea Turtles on the
In 2001 the MTA retired its
fleet of Redbird
subway cars. It gave the trains to states on
the Atlantic coast to serve as artificial reefs for fish. The program has been successful
in supporting the web of undersea life and attracts game fish, which draws
sport fishermen and scuba divers to the reefs. New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina and
Georgia have “reefed” about 1,000 subway cars in all from the MTA.
